How To Wash Your Hands Properly With Soap And Water!
Sometimes, we get so used to doing some things a certain way that we start to wonder if we have forgotten the proper form. You know the feeling, right? You know, have you ever had an instance where you have done something so long that-IF you are doing something wrong-you might not even know about it? Apparently, for most of us, a refresher on how to wash our hands properly (with soap and water) is one of those things we could desperately use and yet never really knew we needed.
So, since there is-rightfully so- an enhanced focus on washing hands properly in 2020, we feel it’s appropriate to share some best practices. Why? Well, for one, practicing good cleanliness and hand washing practices is always a good way to keep yourself healthy when traveling, cooking, and living life in general.
Certainly, it’s hard to dispute that it’s important to wash your hands…but why is it so important to share a reminder about hand washing in 2020?
Well, for many of us, the COVID-19 Coronavirus epidemic is exactly the moment where we were strongly reminded that there is one VERY IMPORTANT task-hand-washing with soap and hot water-which most people simply could do a bit better at.
So, you might ask, what is the proper way to wash your hands with soap and water?
*According to The US Center For Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), below, we have provided the proper way to wash your hands AND we’ve shared some recommended times to wash your hands as well!
Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way
Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.
Follow these five steps every time.
- Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
- Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
- Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
- Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
Wash Your Hands Often to Stay Healthy
You can help yourself and your loved ones stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs:
- Before, during, and after preparing food
- Before eating food
- Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea
- Before and after treating a cut or wound
- After using the toilet
- After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
- After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
- After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
- After handling pet food or pet treats
- After touching garbage
*BONUS-If you are able to use a disposable paper towel, then try to grab your towel first and then use it to turn off the water after you’ve dried your hands because this will help you keep from contaminating yourself by touching a potentially germ-ridden faucet handle.
**Extra Bonus-Also, be sure to wash your hands after touching any surfaces, especially “high-touch” surfaces at public places and at home, AND be sure to wash your hands after coming into contact with other individuals.
***VERY IMPORTANT-While washing your hands is very crucial, one other major way you can help keep yourself healthy and prevent the spread of germs is to avoid touching your face, eyes, ears, mouth and nose…and especially avoid touching these places until you’ve washed your hands thoroughly.
Now, we hope you feel more prepared to stay healthy because you have the proper hand-washing technique in your repertoire!
